senso sounds collects together two of the key tracks from bossman oliver huntemann’s new propaganda album for this 12 inch release. senso has established itself as a key label in the techno scene and huntemanns ear for quality remains as sharp as ever. rotlicht is a precision-honed instrument of techno weaponry - hard as nails and featuring epic and mind-bending breakdowns. additionally the egyptian dj and producer raxon reworks the track into a deep and solid groover with plenty of attitude. ‘poltergeist’ is a journey into huntemann’s feel for sound design and space in a club context, beguiling with its seeming simplicity, before hitting home with shifting, evolving grooves and haunting synth blasts. the young russian maksim dark adds his own interpretation of poltergeist to the release, edging up the darkness a little more and producing a growling, tough techno workout that will go over big on a lot of floors this year.

roots vocalist barry brown has an inimitable style that has long made him a favourite of reggae enthusiasts. drawing from the popular phrasing of horace andy, but morphing it into his own delivery through the kind of wordless slurring that occasionally resembles the sound of a quacking duck, brown found his way into the jamaican music scene through the many amateur west kingston talent contests of the early 1970s, along with fellow aspiring talents such as johnnie clarke, sugar minott and the african brothers, and the mighty diamonds. he also honed his vocal skills on local west kingston sound systems such as tape tone, together with other young dancehall-oriented youth such as barrington levy, sammy dread, roy taylor and tristan palmer. there are still conflicting claims as to who was the first to record brown, with production veteran bunny ‘striker’ lee and sugar minott among the contenders, but in any case, during the late 1970s and early 1980s, he produced a range of captivating work for various producers, much of which is rightly coveted today. ‘ital rock’ appeared on barry’s 1983 lp i’m still waiting, issued by rocktone international, a spin-off of sugar minott’s black roots outfit, based in queens, new york (with a further branch in toronto), the b-side has dean fraser’s previously unreleased electrifying saxophone cut, rescued from dub plate obscurity by jah fingers.

drummer and music producer desmond mahoney is another of the unsung heroes of british reggae. born in jamaica, he moved to the uk in 1967 and began his professional career playing drums in a band called young ones from zion. he was a founding member of black slate when the group formed in 1974, played with them through their glory years and after running a sound system in north london for many years, returned to the fold when the group reformed a few years ago. his first foray in music production probably came during a brief period in toronto in 1978, working with a band called the ishan lions, but he was back in the uk in time for black slate’s breakthrough material, which brought them onto ensign in the uk, barclay in france and alligator in the usa. at the same time, he continued to arrange and produce for a number of british reggae artists operating in both the roots and lover’s rock modes, female duo nya & natty’s ‘one love stylee’ seemed to bridge the two styles quite successfully on this greatly sought-after 12-inch, first issued in 1981 on the s&g label, then based at a record shop in bow.

london s sugarhouse crew have already made some waves with their first two releases, and now the gang are back with round three of their soul-drenched deep house adventures. this time it s maurice jnr and seb miguel teaming up for three crucial jams, each with something different to say. -deebo s quest- is rich with aqueous pad tones and a slick set of drums that shuffle just the way you want it, while -science of life- takes a distinctly detroit-influenced approach that wouldn t sound out of place on mahogani music. that leaves it to -lovin u- to round the ep out with a warm, upbeat roller for those who like their house loaded with passion.

having already made a strong connection with the ever-excellent udacha label, russian duo gamayun now take their talents to hesperian sound division to unfurl more of their delicate, richly musical creations. -golden ratio- leads in on stunning jazz piano refrains, edging threads of percussion into the mix with poise that sets gamayun apart from the rest of the crowd. -ascension- takes things in a more cosmic direction, all swooping and swooning synth lines beamed in from a distant star. -untitled- has a more lazy, blues-minded attitude, while -uvolnenie- edges a little more techno influence into the mix, but truly this is space-age music played by musicians with genuine chops.

cosmic bridge welcomes yet another new talent to the roster: uk producer jordan parsons aka crypticz, who for the past few years has been distilling influences from drum & bass, dubstep, and footwork into a deeply personal sound. following eps and singles for different music, inflect audio, and doc scott’s own 31 records, crypticz delivers a personal, emotive release for cosmic bridge. forever was put together over the past year by om unit and crypticz — with the label boss inviting parsons “to take more risks and guiding him into the fog.” as a result the ep offers a distilled, more refined take on the dub aesthetic that has powered the young producer’s music to date.

phuture-t dials up dub and drumfunk from the samples of greenleaf’s new orleans influenced track, forward motion. the beats are more broken and the effect delays are longer. the signature interview recording has been chopped and used as downbeats on the progression changes.
with melodic and rolling percussion, earl grey creates a cheerful vibe to start the ominous maze remix. the intro leads straight into the body of the track when the contrabass becomes the dominant instrument making the tone tougher. the drum breaks transition through several change ups and syncopated edits.
metro gives mhc a new treatment with extra field recordings and an extended break down. the jungle influence is stronger with bigger, funkier subs. classic break beats are layered with sound effects and noises all supporting the main rhythm of the bassline.

emerging through storm-like waves of distortion, opener ‘alpha’ sets the scene for this beguiling cassette release, with melodies rising out of — and then descending back into — the chaos. ‘3000 years’ takes vocal samples as a starting point, before melting into layer upon layer of delay, after which ‘confounded’ picks up the pace with its heavily distorted beats and the side then closes to the sound of a distant choir burning in acidic ambience in the shape of ‘fruitless clicking’. the nightmarish, malfunctioning machinery vibes continue onto the second side, with the more dance oor-friendly ‘strange conversations’ and ‘the brink’ bookended by the two-part ambient epic ‘pale blue dot’. dark, glitchy, and at times outright uncomfortable — perfectly suited to the cassette format.

check track 3 .... field records looks to l estasi dell oro (christopher ernst, aka penalune) for a new three-track ep for sound systems that once again takes us down the rabbit hole. following on from his previous i look upon nature while i live in a steel city album in 2015, this is another masterfully drawn out and engaging affair. -either to please or to educate- is the intended purpose of this ep release, utilizing guitar, tabla, and other electronic and acoustic instruments. the incessant movement of the metronomic tremors felt underneath our plains lay the rhythm. the threadbare dialogue we use to communicate frays slightly further. these spirals are given an explicit voice through leader annabelle kuwe s dispassioned public address to the remaining world at the great meeting of 2166, as recounted by sadie lapierre on closer achieve ignition .

with the asexual ep by yobkiss, electronic emergencies is back with a true electronic delight. yobkiss consists of dutch instrumentalist and producer paul borchers, currently based in san fransisco, and tokyo resident yuko araki on vocals. their music balances on the edge of avant-garde electronics and flirts with acid pop in dreamy soundscapes, with an analogue synth sound and beautiful vocals in japanese and english. or, in their own words, a pitch-dark, filth-ridden tour de force into the worlds of acid house and electro.

repress - without dl code - susso, aka bassist / producer huw bennett, creates music inspired by, and directly sampling, the magnificent sounds of the mandinka people, recorded during a recent trip to gambia. initially travelling with the aim of gaining perspective as a musician and to discover a new world of music first hand, huw found himself humbled by such a welcoming community of artists, mostly belonging to the celebrated susso and kuyateh griot families.
the tracks are composed entirely from original source material, field recordings and huw’s talents as a multi-instrumentalist, performing tuned percussion from the region including the mandinka balafon, kutiringding drum, aswell drawing on his skill as a professional upright / electric bassist. the music produced has a contemporary electronic sound, whilst still paying homage to a traditional gambian aesthetic. keira (meaning peace) guides the listener through huw’s journey up the river gambia, being welcomed into remote dusty villages, where your people are the most important thing in life

letherette step back up with a new release on their own imprint wulf records with ep4. letherette has released music on labels ho-tep and more recently ninja tune, but after starting their own label wulf at the end of last year have already released ep s 1.2,3, brown lounge vol 3 and now ep4. letherettes signature chops can be heard throughout ep4 from the disco cuts of flowatch to the piano slices of feel it. all mastered to cassette this ep centres around the dance floor but stays true to letherettes sound and melodies.

blind box heads julien sandre and konstress know a thing or two about deep, undulating house grooves, and their continued exploration of immersive cuts for hidden corners of the dance yields further delights on this sixth instalment in the blind box series. the first side of this 12- finds the two label bosses twisting out immaculate jams shot through with playful sound design. -would- locks into a subtle swing and revels in lopsided synth stabs, while -hedone- plunges into a stunning intricate techno landscape peppered with glitchy tones. on the flip, julian alexander follows suit with the crisp, funky -baku man- and the more experimental tones of -casserole-.

georgex brings a poised balance and combination to his tracks of melancholic sounds over more aggressive beats. the titles reflecting a journey that took him to musical places unimagined in his studio beforehand. music is the pathway to his dreams while sunny days in greece also inspire certain feelings in his sound. emotionally charged the bridge features spacious zitar lines and emotive strings that send you upward while the rough and ready groove keeps your feet on the ground. in my dream sprinkles a lighter more airy atmosphere over the dance floor drawing the listener in to it s hypnotic spell.

techno, disco, italo, electronics, house, library, cosmic and ambient frequencies - these are the bedrocks of the midnight drive ethos and sound. a label shining a light on overlooked or unheralded creations and respectfully reissuing them for the contemporary audience. a label that respects and understands the connection between these disparate and sometimes forgotten forms of musical expression and celebrates them. drive001 sees us step back to 1998 and into the hands of the duo of damon wild and mederic nebinger, recording together as blue maxx they quietly unleashed some of the finest futuristic widescreen techno and electro to emanate from nyc in the late 1990 s. utilising a small sub-label of wild s seminal techno imprint synewave called deja vous the pair embarked on a slew of ep s released over the space of a couple of years with private life being one of the last. across 3 tracks private life opens up a new sound world, from the driving, tool-like qualities of the a-side cut - all swinging drum programming, synth stabs and deranged metallic percussions to the deeper, more clandestine leanings of the b-side tracks, mining a more musical and electro infused vein, the whole ep stands out as something truly original. a hallmark of the blue maxx sound. this is the first time private life has been reissued, almost 20 years has passed and somehow wild and nebinger s style remains utterly fresh and contemporary. a truly rare and essential piece of hi-tech techno expression that could easily have been released this week. such is the quality on display within these grooves. remastered by curvepusher. artwork and design by atelier superplus.

all source material recorded in gran paradiso, july 2015 engineered at odd phasing and echoes, amsterdam nl photography bjnilsen bjnilsen is a composer and sound artist based in amsterdam. his work primarily focuses on the sounds of nature and how they affect humans. recent work has explored the urban acoustic realm and industrial geography in the arctic region of norway and russia. his original scores and soundtracks have featured in theatre, dance performances and film. celebrating 27 years as a recording artist massif trophies is the first solo release for editions mego. in 2015 he set off on a month long hiking trip in gran paradiso to explore the acoustic environments in the alpine landscape. drawn to the monotonous and physical effort that mountains and high altitudes contributes, this became one of the main inspirations for the album, reflecting upon the perception of the landscape during several hours of physical difficulty, let alone rapid weather changes, horizontal thunderstorms and rock avalanches. it is also about the scope of details and perception of the path and the myth of the mountain as the accursed or sacred place. the five pieces contains narratives based on experiences and recordings from the trip.

olim in latin can be used to indicate a time in the past or in the future. it can mean ‘once upon a time’ and ‘someday in the future’. a name and a project to try to move away from trends and genres, by taking inspiration from the past but at the same time leaving it, moving forward to shape a different and more narrative sound. the first attempt to do so is recursively: an 8 track album, opening with a sentence from bunny marrett sampled from an old documentary about st paul’s and the jamaican immigration in bristol during the 80’s. inspired by those intro words, recursively is a journey born from many years moving around, packing and unpacking suitcases, leaving villages, finding cities,leaving friends and finding more, emigrating, integrating. it’s a story about an entire generation trying to find the peace somewhere, somehow, sometimes by repeating the same steps in a loop of actions which seem to be the same but ultimately never are. it’s a soundtrack of those feelings and at the same time a message of hope to continue the journey through the faith that the meaning is the infinite journey itself. an infinite loop masterfully represented in carol rollo’s illustration. a story to be continued.
